oscars-2010-winnersThe 82nd Academy Awards or popularly known as “The Oscars” was held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by two of the greatest comedians in Hollywood – Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. It was the third time that Martin hosted Oscars ceremonies while it was the first time for Baldwin. Hundreds of A-list celebrities gathered in the grandest and the most prestigious awarding ceremony that honors the best in the movie industry.

The Iraq war film about United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team by Kathryn Bigelow won The Oscars “Best Picture” award. This full-tilt action picture has beaten “Avatar”, the no. 1 all-time blockbuster film directed by her ex-husband – James Cameron. Bigelow won the “Best Director” award and made her the first woman to receive this award in the Academy Awards history. Aside from the “Best Picture” and “Best Director” awards, the film also received four other awards – Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. American journalist, film producer, and screenwriter Mark Boal won the “Best Original Screenplay.” Paul N.J. Ottosson won in the “Best Sound Editing” category and together with Ray Beckett he won they won the “Best Sound Mixing.” And the sixth award received by “The Hurt Locker” film is the “Best Film Editing” taken by Bob Murawski and Chris Innis.

James Cameron’s film, “Avatar,” who also got the same number of nominations (9 nominations) like “The Hurt Locker” won three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects. Mauro Fiore received the award for “Best Cinematography,” Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg received award for the “Best Art Direction,” and Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham and Andrew R. Jones received the “Best Visual Effects” award.

Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges were the brightest stars of the night receiving the “Best Actress” and “Bes Actor” award. Christoph Waltz won the “Best Supporting Actor” and he is now the second Austrian actor to receive an Oscar. Mo’Nique won the “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance as Mary Lee Johnston in “Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire” and she is now the fourth African American actress to win an Oscar in the said category.

The computer-animated comedy-adventure film “Up” produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures won the “Best Animated Feature” award beating “Coraline,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and “The Secret of Kells.” Argentinian film “The Secret in Their Eyes” by Juan Jose Campanella won the “Best Foreign Language Film” award.

Other winners in the 2010 Oscars are Louie Psihoyos and Fisher Stevens (The Cove) for the “Best Documentary Feature” category, Roger Ross Williams and Elinor Burkett (Music by Prudence) for the “Best Documentary Short” category, Joachim Back and Tivi Magnusson (The New Tenants) for the “Best Live Action Short” category, Nicolas Schmerkin’s “Logorama” for “Best Animated Short” category, Michael Giacchino (Up) for “Best Original Score,” and “The Weary Kind” (Crazy Heart) by Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett for “Best Original Song” category.
